The dependency model generated numerous works across disciplines that attempted to delineate the historical (though unintended) contributions of Latin America's unchronicled peoples to the formation of the modern world economy. These scholars reasoned that it was, after all, the labor of native Americans and Africans in the silver mines and on the plantations of the New World which fostered the capital accumulation necessary for Europe's industrial revolution. 5 Eventually, these structural analyses came under criticism for portraying colonized peoples as little more than a peripheral militia cow from whom a surplus was extracted and sent back to a center or metropolis.
Native depopulation has frequently been assessed by studying tribute records in which forasteros were often not represented, thereby casting shadows on the conclusions of some earlier population studies. 16 In addition, by combining analyses of population movements with qualitative data derived from judicial proceedings and notarial records, a few historians and anthropologists have begun to grasp a clearer understanding of the interior meanings of indigenous life and to produce rich studies of Andean ethnogenesis.
