In higher-duty applications, defect sizes and the effects of processing on these can only be assessed metallographically, because significant defects may have sizes in the range 1-50~m. The use of fracture mechanics to treat the complex distributions of defects found in many engineering alloys and components also requires detailed investigation into interactions between closely-spaced defects.
