Since perfect prediction is not attainable here we will discuss the utility of predicting chronic effects of chemicals on individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems from information obtained in short-term (acute) laboratory exposures and we discuss the feasibility of assays which can be used to adequately protect aquatic communities from the adverse effects of chronic exposures to toxicants (Stephan, 1986). We realize that we cannot expect to be able to predict the effects of many toxicants on ecosystem function from simple, single-species bioassays (Cairns, 1988).
