Death is a fact of life; a moment's reflection tells us that death is not simply the last moment of life. 5 Montaigne, in his penetrating essay on death, asked, "Why do you fear your last day? It contributes no more to your death than each of the others. " 6 It would be a simple matter (and a most seductive one) to continue citing important quotations about death. Virtually every great thinker (generally early in life or toward its end) has thought deeply and written about death; and many have concluded that death is inextricably a part of life, and that lifelong consideration of death enriches rather than impoverishes life.
8 When, however, one enters the second mode of being (mindfulness of being), one exists authentically (hence, the frequent modern use of the term "authenticity" in psychology). In this state, one becomes fully self-awareaware of oneself as a transcendental (constituting) ego as well as an empirical (constituted) ego; one embraces one's possibilities and limits; one faces absolute freedom and nothingness-and is anxious in the face of them.
