Xxxv Introduction Hunger and malnutrition are greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined and present the number one risk to public health worldwide. By attempting to shed light on some of the issues involved this work raises many many questions, perhaps more so than can be answered in a book such as this. Many of the questions, too, are of a fundamental nature and of such magnitude as to be of significant social and political import. In light of this, coming to grips with the constantly shifting social, scientific and political tectonics of food security is of paramount importance.

Furthermore, in placing the problems of food security and general nutrition in the wider context of global mortality and morbidity, it helps place emphasis not only on the problems of hunger itself but also on associated diseases resulting from poor nutrition practices such as overnutrition and many ischemic heart diseases (IHD). This is because IHDs are becoming an increasing global dilemma closely associated with problems of reduced blood circulation resulting from poor diets and physical inactivity, among other things.
