Kent Worcester sees James as “a deeply committed but iconoclastic thinker” (Worcester 1989, 41–43), while E. P. ”1 If, as some believe, Marxism was Janus-faced from the outset, looking in both a democratic and an authoritarian direction, James belongs to the democratic camp. This diversity of critical opinion is one of the reasons why, in an effort to identify the components of James’s thought and of his political practice that he took from Marxism, one should also be mindful of the ideas and experiences that he brought to his reading of Marxist texts.

James recognized the literary qualities of Trotsky’s History immediately, and hailed it as a masterpiece of prose narrative. John Archer, who was close to James in the 1930s, recalls that James was “dazzled” by the literary qualities of Trotsky’s work (Archer 1996, 61). For someone who had not read a line of Marx before arriving in England, and whose knowledge of Soviet Russia in 1932 was limited to a single entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica, Trotsky’s work was a revelation. Here at one and the same time was the description of a portentous event of recent history written by one of its greatest protagonists; an interpretation of that history which gave ample space not only to the accomplishments of the Russian revolutionary leadership but also to its uncertainties and to the complexity of decision making in a crisis situation; and a great work of art, which, for James, proved beyond doubt that history and literature could coexist in the same text.
