The technique has been used successfully for many years and allowed papyri to be removed from paper and various other types of support: examples include those pasted to one side of the glass frame, attached to goldbeaters’ skin, glassine paper or linen. Where the papyrus is to be removed from a paper backing the facing technique can be described in a series of stages. After the usual pre-conservation examination and documentation of the papyrus, before facing up it is sometimes necessary to do some surface consolidation and trim away excess backing.
Also various types of transparent papers or materials such as goldbeaters skin have been used to repair papyri and in many cases over the years these materials have degraded, shrunk or become cockled, sometimes very badly, and this in turn has affected the papyri. Very often the area where a window was cut to allow the text to be seen has meant that the papyrus has been unevenly supported and this has caused fracturing (Taf. IIIb). In the British Museum’s collection there is a group known as the Ramesseum Papyri.
Salt encrustations can be much more destructive to the papyrus and although water soluble they can be difficult to remove if the papyrus is very degraded or has fugitive media. Where possible they are removed by dissolving with water followed by drying between a large stack of blotting paper to pull the salts out. The capillary action method shown by Jörg Graf at the workshop was very interesting and may be a more effective method of doing this. Here too though, there is a concern that the salts may not have been completely removed and may reappear in the future.
